Air Conditioning Not Beating the Heat?

Our recent heat wave has left many of our clients wondering why their air conditioning doesn’t seem up to the task. While the issue may require a professional repair (i.e., a freon charge, etc.), there are two simple things you can do that might solve the problem. According to our expert, Greg Zahler of Zahler Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc., the first step is to check your furnace filter. If your filter has not been changed in the last three to six months (depending on model), it is likely preventing some of the cooling air flow you are hoping for, in addition to making your system work harder. Change the filter immediately, and write the date on a Post-It Note that you attach to the furnace. That way you’ll know how long it has been between filter changes the next time you look.

The second most important thing you can do is to take a look at the air conditioning condenser unit that sits outside your home. Dirt, leaves and cottonwood seeds can clog this vital cooling element. Greg recommends using a water hose with a jet spray to clean your condenser unit in the Spring just as you are about to start-up your air conditioning system. Spray the outside of the unit as well as the inside. After the cottonwoods release their seeds, the cleaning process should be done again.

So… What Would Colette Do?

Over the years, our clients have joked that after working with Colette & Company, they no longer feel capable of making decisions without us! Short of passing out WWCD (What Would Colette Do?) bracelets, we thought it would be fun to have a forum where our clients can get blog feedback to their burning questions. Want to know how high to hang Uncle Jeb’s portrait? Wonder where’s the best place in town to find fabulous accessories? Simply click on the contact page on our web site and shoot us your question.
